Ducks enjoying fresh clean water at Hill of Dreams TN farm

We Had Extra Straw. The Ducks Did Not Ask for It. Here Is What Happened Next.

July 10, 20262 min read

We normally use woodchips for bedding in the duck pen.

Last week Lisa noticed we had extra straw sitting around.

We did not want it to go to waste.

So she tossed some into the duck pen.

No plan behind it.

No strategy.

Just extra straw that needed a home.

The ducks went absolutely wild.

They waddled around it.

They nestled down into it.

They rearranged it to suit themselves.

And the next morning — cleaner eggs than we had seen in weeks.

Nobody told the ducks to be more productive.

Nobody hung a motivational poster in the duck pen.

We just gave them something unexpectedly nice.

And they responded.

The ducks did not need a performance review. They needed straw.

What this has to do with your employees

Every year, health insurance renewal season arrives and the conversation goes one of two ways.

Either the employer absorbs the increase quietly.

Or the employee absorbs it — through higher payroll deductions, higher copays, or a plan that covers less than it used to.

Neither feels like straw in the duck pen.

Both feel like the same pen with less in it.

Gallup research found that engaged employees require a 31% pay increase before they will seriously consider leaving a job they value.

But a reduction in effective take-home pay — which is exactly what a premium increase without a corresponding raise represents — moves that needle quietly.

Over time.

Without anyone noticing.

Until someone puts in their notice.

The straw does not have to be dramatic.

It does not have to be expensive.

Sometimes it is structuring benefits so employees take home a little more each month.

Sometimes it is a small gesture that signals the employer sees them as people, not just payroll.

Better morale.

Cleaner eggs.

Not because you told them to respond.

But because you gave them something unexpectedly good.

And they responded.

This article is for entertainment purposes only. No critters were harmed in the making of it. AgentDavidCares.com is not responsible for any sudden urge to add straw to your office. The ducks did not ask for attribution but would probably appreciate it.
